| Attached photos of my Brompton M6R-Plus modified with 80 mm in-line skate wheels in place of standard Brompton rack wheels. The mod allows for the folded bike to be towed along reasonably bumpy surfaces and allows for folding without the seat post grinding in the mud! I leave an S-bag attached to the bike and use the bag handle to tow the folded bike for distances of around 100 metres at a time. The main disadvantage is that the bike will roll around in the back of a car unless pinned down in a corner. Care is needed when unfolding on a slope! The new wheels protrude around 2.5 Cm or 1 inch from the side of the rack, so might catch the heels of some riders. Narrower wheels might be available but provide less stability when towing the folded bike. Materials needed; four in-line skate wheels of 76 mm or 80 mm diameter with 8mm bearings. M6 bolts of various lengths with nuts and washers. A short length of alloy tubing to make bushes for the wheels to mount on the M6 bolts and prevent the wheel bearings from being crushed. A hacksaw or small pipe cutter to cut the tubing and a file to smooth the cut tube ends and make fine adjustments. A 6mm drill might be required to open out the two rear holes in the rack. Remove standard wheels. Bolt on new wheels. Total time around 1 hour. Submitted by Mike on 13th March 2008. Copyright is retained by myself.
